Can ASEAN (and Vietnam) Get Some Growth Momentum Like China?

Presented by:

Prof. David Dapice, Senior Economist

Vietnam Program, Center for Business and Government, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

Date:

Nov 17, 2003 at FETP

In the past ten years, there has been a reversal of fortunes between ASEAN and China. While China is gaining rapidly in GDP growth, FDI, and exports, most of ASEAN (including Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam) are falling behind China and below average of developing countries. Professor Dapice discussed four possible hypotheses to explain the reversal, with a focus on internal problems of ASEAN. These explanations linked to the implications for Vietnam, where competitive and profitable companies are needed to improve competitiveness of the economy.

The lectures and discussions were presented to three different groups of participants. At the University of Economics at Ho Chi Minh City (November 11th, 2003), participants are faculty and students of economics. At the Maastricht MBA Program at the University of Technology at Ho Chi Minh City (November 16th, 2003) participants are business managers. And at the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program (November 17th, 2003) participants are faculty and students of public policy.
