The terminology “re-engineering” (or “re-structuring”) still sounds fairly unfamiliar in Viet Nam although it has been a common term in developed countries. Generally, re-engineering is a method that helps businesses to prevent and cure possible “diseases”. It is designed on the basis of reinstating balanced relationships in a corporation.
According to Mr. Tu, Vietnamese businesses still pay attention to curing “diseases” only, but measures to prevent them are mostly ignored. This is demonstrated by the fact that Vietnamese businesses raise the issue of reforming their organization and operations only when they have been in serious disorder, e.g. insolvency or nearly bankruptcy. There has been almost no business that ever thinks of re-structuring itself to effectively accommodate business expansion strategy.
Corporate re-structuring generally consists of the following areas: business structure, organizational structure, procedural and regulatory structure, and resources structure. However in a specific context, a corporation may choose to focus on one or several areas mentioned above. |
