Vietnam has been making efforts to join the WTO since 1995. During the accession process, it is crucial that all relevant stake-holders gain a comprehensive understanding of the socio-economic impact of WTO membership, in order to set an optimal time-table.

The class "Trade Policy Reform and the Role of International Institutions: What Vietnam Needs to Know" welcomed guest lecturer Le Luong Minh, Acting Director of the Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Minh is also a member of the government team negotiating the terms of Vietnam’s WTO membership.

Mr. Minh’s lecture analyzed the opportunities and the dangers of WTO membership, as well as Vietnam’s advantages and disadvantages during the accession process. Most importantly, by clearly laying out the road ahead, Mr. Minh provided the class with a sense confidence in Vietnam’s WTO accession strategy.
