Vietnam is the world?s second largest exporter of rice. An Giang produces more rice than any other province in Vietnam. Is it reasonable to raise the issue of food security in Vietnam's rice bowl?
Ms. Song An, senior lecturer of the University of Economics - Ho Chi Minh City presented the results of her recent research in a lecture titled "Food security at household level in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle, Mekong Delta" to participants in the Fulbright School's Rural Development course. The research suggests that even though food security is guaranteed at the national and provincial levels, it cannot be taken for granted at the household level.
In An Giang, food security indicators show significant improvements in recent years. However, 25% of An Giang households consume less than the "warning level" 1800 kcal/person/day. Ms. Song An's findings suggest policy implications as well as direction for further research. |
