Capital: Value Creation in the Global Economy

Presented by:

Prof. Hilton Root, Senior Research Fellow

Economic Strategy Institute, Washington DC

Date:

Mar 13, 2003 at FETP

Professor Hilton Root is a senior research fellow at the Economic Strategy Institute in Washington, D.C. He has published multiple books and papers on political economy. His recent research has concentrated on the economies of Asia, with a special focus on China, Korea, India, and Indonesia.

In his lecture at the Fulbright School, Professor Root presented lessons from the knowledge-based economy, with an analysis of the success of Silicon Valley. In his view, ample capital investment, advanced infrastructure, and preferential government treatment combined are not enough to make a high tech park successful. According to Professor Root, Silicon Valley's success can be attributed to, among other factors, a special form of capital, a non-traditional corporate structure, and an environment which fosters innovation and new social values.

Participants in the Fulbright School's one-year program, School faculty, as well as Ho Chi Minh City government officials and Fulbright School alumni all participated in the two and a half hour discussion.
